In the heart of Epirus, in a corner where tradition meets authenticity, I discovered “Nostos cafe“. Located in Nea Seleukia of Thesprotia, it is one of those places that has something special — a “nosto” that makes you feel at home. It has only been open for 1.5 years, but it has already become a favorite meeting point for young and old, offering experiences full of flavor, warmth and history.
For your travel diary:
Nea Seleukia is a historic town in Epirus, just outside Igoumenitsa, that carries its own unique history and cultural heritage. It was founded in the middle of the 20th century, in 1947, by refugees who came from the Seleucia region of Mikra Asia, during the Mikra Asia Catastrophe of 1922.
Its proximity to Igoumenitsa makes it easily accessible for travelers heading to the Ionian Islands or for those exploring the wider Epirus region. It is a good base to get to know the beauties of Thesprotia and at the same time to get in touch with a more “hidden” history of the place.
Let’s get to know NOSTOS
Hospitality in Nostos is warm and affordable. The owners are people who love what they do and it shows. It is no coincidence that the cafe has won the hearts of locals and travelers alike. It is located in the center of the village, and in addition to its beautiful interior, it has tables outside under the mulberry trees for sunny days!
My visit to Nostos was a tasty surprise! In addition to coffee, drinks and for lunch, tsipouraki and very good wine, the menu includes burgers, clubs, but also handmade appetizers and home-made dishes, such as “grandma’s meatballs” that taste like Greece. Each dish is reminiscent of a family table and, at the same time, exudes the aura of Epirus. I singled out the “saganaki”, with organic eggs, Sary pastourma, Sary civil sundzuki, tomato and cucumber!
On the “sweet” side, you’ll find a wide variety of homemade desserts, including banoffee, cheesecake, and orange pie! Of course I tried and singled out their ekmek — one of the best I’ve had! The balance of the cream with the syrupy kandaifi was just wonderful. Also, the apple tart with the fluffy dough and fresh apples was perfect for the first chilly fall afternoons! If you want something more playful, Nosto’s waffles are really delicious!
Why visit?
The area of Nea Seleukia, although less known than Zagorochoria or Ioannina, has its own charm. It is a beautiful stop for those who travel to Epirus and want to discover its most hidden corners. Nostos is the perfect reason for such a detour. There you will find an authentic, friendly atmosphere, where guests become friends and moments leave a sweet taste.
If you are traveling, it is the ideal place to stop, enjoy a coffee accompanied by traditional flavors and recharge your batteries for the rest of your explorations in the area.
